This is the mindset I tried to keep throughout my first year of college.
It's, of course, going to be scary when you are moving somewhere new and your normal is completely switched, instead of thinking about it in a nerve-racking way, try thinking to yourself to optimize your time you get to meet new people and grow.
WHAT IS THE MEANING BEHIND GAY PRIDE COLORS HOW TO
Obviously, for any incoming freshman reading this you always hear how scary it is to start out new and how to put yourself out there constantly. Starting in the fall I attended The University Of Oklahoma, I'm originally from Arlington, Texas, go, Cowboys, yay! Surprisingly even though I am not that far away, not many people from my school were attending OU in the fall so I was going to Norman with a fresh start basically. When I celebrate Pride, I am celebrating the persistence and enduring spirit of this community that was once deemed a mental illness.
It’s not that straight and cisgendered individuals are not valid or worthy of celebration, but that they as a community have not faced the adversity and discrimination that the LGBT community has. However, when the LGBT community celebrates Pride, they are celebrating the achievements of the community as a whole. I think this song by A Great Big World says it best. So don’t feel ashamed for celebrating one of the many facets of you. Are you straight or cisgender? That’s awesome! Are you gay or transgender? That’s fantastic! Do you fall somewhere in between? Good for you! Sexuality and gender orientation is but a small part of what makes you great. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, you should feel good about yourself. The issue being is when individuals confuse LGBT Pride as being about delight in the quality of being LGBT.
